Contemporary sociology, experiencing a 'narrative turn,' increasingly works with textual data—from biographical interviews to media discourses. However, the rich potential of narratives for revealing latent social connections (cooperation, conflict, influence) and semantic structures remains underappreciated in quantitative research. The problem lies in a methodological gap: sociologists recognize the importance of networks and the complexity of texts, but lack tools for their systematic analysis.
Network analysis methods allow us to understand the hidden structural relationships within narratives. Because these methods must be sensitive to context, intentions, and cultural and linguistic features, advances in network analysis of Russian-language texts may prove useful not only to sociologists studying biographies and identity but also to a broader range of researchers working with textual data.
