The Russian Public Chamber held a discussion of a study on the development of the non-profit sector in BRICS countries.
The study was prepared by the team of the Laboratory of Applied Network Research at the initiative of the BRICS Civil Society Council and with the participation of experts from various countries.
On May 14, the Civic Chamber of the Russian Federation hosted a presentation of the study and an expert discussion on trends in the development of the non-profit sector in the BRICS countries.
During the presentation, the authors presented the general findings and analytical results of the study and also discussed the development of the non-profit sector in India and China in more detail.
The event was attended by Lab staff members Ivan Klimov, Alexander Zabolotsky, and Anna Kartasheva, as well as project colleagues Konstantin Gavrilov, Daria Osokina, Maria Chepeleva, and Anna Ocheret.
The discussion focused on how the role of NGOs is changing in BRICS countries, which models of interaction between the state and the non-profit sector are emerging in different national contexts, the challenges organizations face, and the opportunities for international expert and civic cooperation.
The sector is structured differently in different BRICS countries. In some countries, NGOs are deeply integrated into government programs. In others, independent public initiatives are stronger. In others, religious and community traditions play a significant role. Elsewhere, there are international donors, platforms, digital tools, and volunteer networks.
The study focuses on the structure of the nonprofit sector, the specific development of nonprofits in BRICS countries, and the institutional and social conditions that determine the role of nonprofits in addressing socially significant issues. The NGO sector cannot be understood without its cultural, historical, and political context.
