Analytic Workshop
What is the Analytic Workshop?
The Analytic workshop is a platform for students and employees of the HSE University, who want to get advice on the application of data analysis methods (statistics, machine learning, mining, etc.) in their term papers, theses and publications. Our masters are students of the second year of master's program Applied statistics with network analysis under the guidance of researchers of the International Laboratory of Applied Network Analysis provide pro-bono consultations (10 hours per project).
How we can help
- Research design
- Data analysis
- Presentation
- Article or book project
- Term paper or course paper
- Dissertation (Master's, PhD)
We are guided by the principles of academic ethics in our work, so we will not be able to model and fully calculate the data for your projects. Rather, we provide consulatations, advising you on the easiest ways to answer your research question, what steps to avoid, how to justify your choice of method, and so on.
Walk-in hours
Not all statistical questions require lengthy interactions with a statistical consultant. We provide walk-in hours to assist with statistical questions answerable within an hour or so. These may include quick questions about interpreting statistical output, generating quick graphs for a paper or presentation, or something similar. You are welcome to drop by without an appointment on Thursdays, from 14.00 till 18.00.
Or, you can schedule an appointment for a personal meeting using our web form

Feedback
Klimochkina Anastasia, PhD student, visiting lecturer at the Faculty of Social Sciences, Department of Psychology, HSE University:
«I asked for a consultation regarding data analysis for my dissertation research. I was quickly assigned a meeting and immediately understood my tasks. When I met her in person, Polina helped me make the necessary calculations. I am very grateful for your help!»
Zastavnitski Asya, student, HSE University:
«Polina, I want to express my gratitude for the consultation and competent explanation of my questions! Your advice and recommendations were very helpful in building models for my research. Also, I was pleased with the pleasant communication. If I have any more questions, be sure to contact you in the Analytical Workshop!»
Shcheglova Daria, Research Fellow, Institute of Education, HSE University:
«The work of the consulting workshop is a very useful and relevant initiative. Often, those who work with data need advice on how to organize and structure the data in the best way for specific tasks, as well as hints on the best ways to visualize them. Very useful is the "outside view", as well as work in new resources, data processing services.
As a wish, I can note that it would be useful, at the initiative of the workshop, to contact a center for advanced training to organize a course of work with data for researchers (sociologists, analysts) - to tell and show modern ways, the basics of working in R, for example.»
Shubenkova Alexandra - Institute for Applied Political Studies:
«Thanks to the Analytical Workshop and personally to Artyom Volgin. The study on the municipal agenda on social networks has become more complete and high-quality. The project itself not only helps to solve analytical tasks at a high level, but unites students from different faculties to work together. We express our gratitude to the workshop staff for their professionalism.»
Tyulyupo Alexei - Research Assistant at the Laboratory for Economic and Social Research, HSE University:
«I would like to note that methodological consultation for a person who is in the process of working on his own research is probably the most difficult type of consultation. Since the researcher is already immersed in the subject, he has his own idea of the methodology, and poses specific directed questions to which, quite possibly, in principle there is no answer. As a result, during the consultation I did not have a clear idea of further methodological steps for the development of the study, however, this should not be expected.
At the same time, the consultation turned out to be extremely useful, since Lara made great efforts to understand my research interest, and, thanks to my broader horizons and experience working with network methods, during the conversation I managed to exclude approaches that seemed appropriate in the further development of the analysis. Additionally, a clearer understanding of the possible requirements for working in social media analysis magazines has appeared.
In general, visiting the methodological workshop saved me a lot of time and effort.»
Gersson Paolo Martell:
«Lara’s feedback and suggestions have significantly improved the path my research paper was headed towards. She is very professional and addressed a couple of my initial questions. We followed in person to discuss point by point the most important parts of my initial structure and brainstorming. Her insight on the overall picture and task was clear. I appreciate her help greatly.»
Elena Dzeranova, student, HSE University:
«I would like to express my gratitude to Ekaterina for her proactive approach at studying the topic of my work and high-quality recommendations for choosing the research method. The consultation was useful both for my master's thesis and for me personally! Thank you very much to Ekaterina!»
Korneyev Aleksey, student, HSE University:
«Polina, I am very grateful for your help that was very useful! Your advice has helped me make an adequate data analysis and form a basic understanding of structural equations subject. Thanks to this, even at the initial level I can use this method in the future. Thank you very much, you were very helpful!»
Nurdinova Ayishat, student, HSE University:
«I am very grateful to Polina for detailed consultations on a new and difficult topic for me. The information was provided in a structured and understandable way, and there was always an opportunity to ask questions or have an additional consultation during the research. Throughout the entire period, I constantly felt moral support, because I knew that I could always ask for help and I would be promptly answered. I think I was very lucky to have such a sensitive and competent consultant as Polina!»
Tochilina Alexandra, student, HSE University:
«Thanks to Ksenia from the analytical workshop, I was able to systematize all the parts of the diploma that caused difficulties. And before we got to the tasks that I myself had identified as problematic, we discussed the essence of the work, I was asked questions to immerse myself in the topic, which shows the professionalism of the people working in the analytics workshop. They not only help me to deal with issues that cause difficulties, but overview the work as a whole and give recommendations and valuable advice on what to pay attention to. What's more, I really liked the accessible form in which the information was presented - this made it much easier to understand, thank you!»
