ANR-Lab Open Seminar "Geography of Influence: How Attention to Russian Research Is Distributed on the World Stage"
The invited speaker of the laboratory, PhD in sociology Katerina Guba, will talk about how attention to Russian research is distributed on the world stage.

At the seminar, we will discuss the issue of global inequality in academic recognition, focusing on the geography of citations in the field of Russian Studies. Historically, Russian studies has developed largely under the influence of Western institutions, while for a long time the role of scientists within Russia was limited. In the last decade, Russian researchers in the social sciences have become more visible in global scholarship, but have their presence reduced geographic barriers to recognition?
In our study, we analyzed a set of publication data and citations (based on the Web of Science database, 1990-2020). Our goal was to understand how much the author's country of affiliation affects the academic attention to their work. Particular attention was paid to the question: are Russian researchers undervalued in global scholarly communication?
The results confirmed an important trend: even when controlling for article quality, scientists from "peripheral" regions, including Russia, indeed systematically receive fewer citations than representatives of the "centers" of world science.
Seminar language: Russian.
