Meetup 'Semantic network analysis of news: what do news items look like in different publications?'

Event ended

On Saturday, November 16 at 18:00, as part of the HSE R Meet Up community event series, Stanislav Pashkov, a lecturer in the Master's programme 'Data Analytics and Social Statistics' and a research assistant at the Laboratory for Studies in Economic Sociology, will speak on the topic 'Semantic network analysis of news: what do news messages look like in different publications?'

Economic news can be useful, scary, and mysterious — in short, different. We constantly read news about rising food prices, falling unemployment, recession… but what if the newsmakers mean 'Negativni dobiček'? Plain text analysis does not always reveal hidden structures. But simple graphs can help us with this! At the meetup, we will get acquainted with advanced methods of quantitative and qualitative content analysis that can be done using R. We will discuss the methodology of semantic network analysis to identify hidden connections between economic terms and their context in the news. Participants will need a basic understanding of R, and the methods focus on libraries such as rvest, igraph, corpustools, stringr, tibble (we recommend installing them in advance). Come and figure out what differences and features appear when using economic terms in different media outlets. Let's try to find 'Negativni dobiček' together.

The event will be held in a hybrid mode: online and offline (Moscow, Pokrovsky Boulevard, 11, room G120).

To participate in the meetup, you have to register.

HSE R Meet Up is a community of R programming language enthusiasts. HSE R Meet Up meetings are held both online and in person in Moscow, St. Petersburg and Perm. The project is aimed at joint study of data analysis methods using the R language, solving and discussing real cases and the opportunity to share your projects and receive feedback.
