International paper development workshop on scientific networks
The NRU HSE International Laboratory for Applied Network Research, together with Faculty of Social Sciences, University of Ljubljana, is delighted to invite papers for the International paper development workshop on scientific networks on July 22, 2019 in Moscow, Russia. Best papers from the workshop will be invited for submission to a special issue in one of the renowned journals in the field of scientometrics or network analysis. Special paper development sessions are planned at several academic conferences in 2019-2020 for selection of papers to special issues.
Scientific networks are the developing field of scientometric research, focused on modeling collaboration between scientists (co-authorship, co-citation, and co-topics)[1]. Even though scientific networks occupy a modest place in scientometric research, we argue that scientific collaboration studies with network analysis can contribute to the emergent debates about the transformation of science. Recent trends in analysis of science transformation[2] are focused on a rising demand for knowledge application, decreasing the gap between knowledge production and transfer to practice, and increasing interaction between science and other societal actors and spheres (industry and government). Scientific networks research, with its relational nature, helps to grasp these modern trends of science transformation in different disciplines. It allows to analyze the relations between scientists, scientific institutes and projects; to discover the reasons for their collaboration, integration, importance; and to measure their prestige, popularity, success, and, finally, social impact.
We welcome contributions that study scientific networks (e.g., co-authorship networks, citation networks) in the social sciences and other scientific fields; propose methodological approaches to study different kinds of scientific networks; propose methodology to evaluate scientific communities’ social impact.
Given the limited attention paid to scientific networks, this call for papers is purposefully broad. What is critical is to build bridges between different scholars who study scientific networks in national, international, interdisciplinary, and other diverse contexts, by using relational approach in order to help develop new methodological, empirical and/or theoretical insights. Papers presented at the workshop are expected to guide future research by addressing various factors that shape scientific networks across time and space. Participants are expected to present well-developed working drafts on July 22, 2019, and serve as discussants in a small intensive workshop group setting.
The workshop will be conducted by Anuška Ferligoj (University of Ljubljana, ANR-Lab) and Dmitry Zaytsev (ANR-Lab). Special guest is Vladimir Batagelj (University of Ljubljana, ANR-Lab). The workshop will be held at NRU HSE Study Center “Voronovo” as a final event of the 10th International Summer School “Analysis of Scientific Networks”. There is no fee for participation. The call for applications to the workshop open until June 23, 2019, and the full paper submission and registration is July, 10, 2019. The application may include an abstract (up to 500 words), an updated CV and a motivation letter with description of your research interests in the area of scientific networks (one pdf file of approximately 3 pages).
