On December 26, 2024, Sergei Davydov, an analyst at the International Laboratory for Applied Network Analysis, took part as an invited expert in the final meeting of the VСIOM Scientific Council on the topic: 'Russian Society-2024: Results of the Year and Main Trends.'

This time, the discussion of the year's results took place in five areas: socio-political, socio-economic, socio-demographic, youth policy and media.

In his speech, Sergey Davydov drew attention to the fact that the media and communications sphere, on the one hand, is closely interconnected with the political sphere, and on the other, depends on general trends of a technological nature. 2024 has become the year of development and deepening of trends that emerged in the previous period. Thus, the slowdown of YouTube and the strengthening of Telegram's position were the result of the regulatory policy carried out since 2022. Also, a few years ago, a trend of penetration of artificial intelligence and the associated growth in the production of synthetic content emerged. In this context, there is a shift in priorities from digital literacy of the population to digital hygiene skills – conscious activity in the digital environment aimed at reducing threats and risks.

According to the speaker, when discussing the media communications sphere, it is necessary to critically approach a number of theses that have become widespread. For example, the “struggle between the Internet and television” is a metaphor that has no empirical support. The mythologized ideas include the idea of audience migration between social media; this phenomenon requires a more in-depth analysis.
