Research and Study Group "Network methods and models in text mining": series of the seminars in October-December 2015

In October 2015 Research and Study Group "Network methods and models in text mining" resumed conducting its seminars. The head of the Group is Galina V. Gradoselskaya, assistant professor of the Department of Sociological Research Methods of the School of Sociology and leading research fellow of the International laboratory for Applied Network Research of HSE. The main purpose of the Group is to develop new methods of analysis of textual and communicative information. Seminars are held in Russian in the usual format - presentations of participants, group discussion and Q&A. 

During the meetings, which took place in October-December 2015, participants of the Group have discussed such topics as "Connection between the words", "Linguistic picture of the world" and "Modularity". 

Daria Maltseva,a senior researcher at the Laboratory for Applied Network Research, has made a presentation on the theoretical foundations of the relationship between words. The report dealt with the semiotics, analytic philosophy, structural linguistics, computational linguistics and linguistic picture of the world. 

Tamara Shcheglova, a graduate student of the Department of Sociological Research Methods of HSE, has continued to develop the topic of the linguistic picture of the world and talked about how the model of the world is reflected in the language, how it affects the language and how the system of language affects the formation of ideas about the world. 

Galina Gradoselskaya, head of the Research and Study Group and Leading Researcher of the  International Laboratory for Applied Network Research, made a presentation on how to calculate the distance between words. The report refers to various types of measuring the relationship between words and texts, as well as the methods of calculating the proximity, closeness and other relational measures. 

Sofia Dokuka, junior researcher of the International Research Laboratory for Institutional Analysis of Economic Reforms, told about the modularity of communities in social networks and on the methods of communities’ identification. 

Daria Prosyanyuk, deputy head of the Department for Monitoring of the Analytical Centre for the Government of the Russian Federation,conducted a workshop on data analysis programs Automap and ORA.

Research and Study Group will continue its work in 2016.
