ANR-Lab & DASS held a workshop "How to become happier with the right networking?"

Social connections surround us everywhere: in work, friendship, science, and even culture. But how do we know which ones are really important? Network analytics is a field of data analysis and statistics that focuses on the connections between units of analysis when studying various phenomena and processes. By conceptualizing nodes and the connections between them as network objects, network analysis helps study the connections between employees in organizations, scientists in research teams, countries in various coalitions, keywords in texts, characters in literary works, etc. There are two approaches to collecting data for network analysis. The first is focused on collecting information about all participants in a social network, while the second analyzes the personal networks of individual participants in social groups (ego networks).

At the practical workshop, experts from the HSE Laboratory of Applied Network Research and teachers of the Master's program "Data Analytics and Social Statistics" told:

  • Why and in what cases "weak ties" can be more important than close friends.
  • What advantages and limitations does the position of "broker" in the network provide.
  • Do our social connections affect our personal level of happiness.
  • What does the theory of six handshakes say about our connections with each other (and what does the film "Yolki" have to do with it).

Listeners not only learned the theory, but also in practice in the interactive part of the workshop was able to:

  • Visualize your personal network of contacts.
  • Calculate key metrics to assess its strength.
  • Understand how to use this knowledge in your career and life.

Social connections are a resource. Learn to analyze them consciously!
